Black Lanterns Wail: RIP Space Shuttle Discovery OV-103

The Age of Discovery has ended, I weep for the future, alone in the dark.

Discovery:

  • Flew 148 million miles (238 million km)
  • Completed 39 missions
  • Completed 5,830 orbits
  • Spent 365 days in orbit in over 27 years.
  • Flew more flights than any other Orbiter.
  • Launched of the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • First Orbiter Shuttle and first mission flight to dock with the International Space Station.
  • Longest mission for this Orbiter with 15 days.

The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder.

Black Lanterns Wail: RIP Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan. April 10, 1915 to December 7, 2011

It’s been a hard week for good character actors… Harry Morgan past away today. Morgan was at least in his twilight years at 96, but that does put Eli Wallach on a timer, and that is a horrible thing to think on…

For many, Morgan was Col. Potter, though I do remember him from Dragnet, the TV show not the Movie (though he was in both).

Well, boys – it would be hard to call what we’ve been through fun, but I’m sure glad we went through it together.

Black Lanterns Wail: RIP Bill McKinney

BillMcKinney. September 12, 1931 to December 2, 2011

A wonderful character actor has passed awaytoday. Bill McKinney was best known for the  1972’s Deliverance, but I know him from the movie pictured above, The Outlaw Josey Wales. Still a villian, but it’s a better movie and McKinney is better in it…

[if the video doesn’t automatically skip to 1:49 to see Bill]

Black Lanterns Wail: RIP John Neville

John Neville. May 2, 1925 to November 19, 2011

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is by far one of my, if not my absolute, favorite movies of all time…

It is certainly Terry Gilliam’s best work, and one I can watch a dozen times in a row…

And, now it will be a tincher of sadness. John Neville, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, died Saturday in Toronto surrounded by family. There’s a joke about irony in there, but I haven’t heart to make it…

Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince:

And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!
