What song(s) make(s) you smile? Part 2: H – N

Music is supposed to have an impact and depending on the mood I’m in different songs affect me differently so there really isn’t one song…

…also this is an alphabetical list from my iTunes library so there are more songs that I have probably missed, I will amend as I can…

Hard To Say I’m Sorry/Get Away – Chicago

My love of music is drawn from many sources: my parents, my sisters and occasionally high school. If you can’t tell from some of the other music on this list and from my interests in general, I am a bit of a dork. I’m actually very at ease with that, but it also means that I was never very athletic.

And where do the nonathletic kids go in HS? The Band, and more precisely in the case of this song, The Marching Band. I was a brass player and tended toward the lower instruments. I can play the trumpet, but not well.

What does this rambling have to do with Hard To Say I’m Sorry/Get Away? When I was in my junior year our band performed a routine based on Chicago’s music, and this is one of the songs we performed. I really only like Get Away, and for this of you that have heard you should be able to tell why. I am convinced that Hard To Say I’m Sorry is the price brass player have to pay to get to play Get Away…

Hazy Shade Of Winter – Bangles

This is an old favorite of mine, and yes I am aware that this is a cover of a Simon & Garfunkel song. I think the harmonies of the Bangles and the electric rock of their version better suit this song, this is definitely a caver that is better than the original.

He’s No Good for You – New Blood Revival

This is another fun song, and also the first I was not able to find a youtube video for… I can find a video of a turtle biting a dog’s nut, but not this song. Luckily you can buy the mp3 from iTunes or on Amazon.

Heaven – DJ Sammy

This is a strange one for me, I can’t really explain why I like this song, I don’t like a lot of Bryan Adams or dance music, but this is just a fun cover. I’m convinced that Bryan Adams did not own a metronome, because all of his songs are written too slow. This version is sped up and really makes the song pop, and that may be what I like about it…

Here Comes The Sun – George Harrison

This is one of the best Beatles songs ever written, and you can hear the influence of Buddy Holly in the guitar and the lyrics…

High School Never Ends – Bowling for Soup

A very fun song from our old favorites Bowling For Soup, and a very accurate representation on life… *sigh*

Hold Tight! – Beaky, Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Tich

I will admit the fist place I heard this song was in Death Proof, but i have since heard the song a thousand times and to date I’ve only seen Death Proof twice…

The Horse (Stereo) – Cliff Nobles

This is my father’s favorite song… ever. I have seen him rewind tapes and records to listen to this two or three times in a row. It’s the ring tone on his phone. I had the honor of playing this in high school for him.

Hurt – Johnny Cash

This is another cover that is far better than the original. I believe the Trent Reznor really had these emotions in him when he wrote the song, but Johnny Cash’s version is so much more powerful because of the weight his age and experience puts behind it.

Also, this has a better arrangement with the acoustic guitar and the piano…

I’m A Believer – The Monkees

I just love the Monkeees…

Just try and not sing along to this song, I dare you. I triple dog dare you!

This is actually a cover of a cover, Gloria Gaynor was not the first to record this song, but I think Cake really nails the mood…

Illusion – Seikou Nagaoka

I may be the only person left alive that has ever heard of El Hazard (please prove me wrong) and by extension this song. There are actually two versions, English and Japanese, and both are pretty good. I have included the Japanese video just because it starts a little faster…

Jar of Hearts – Christina Perri

This is another one that I can’t really explain… I will stop and listen to this song whenever it comes on the radio, I think it’s the combination of the vocals and the piano…

Recently Film Brain kind of made fun of Kate in his review of When in Rome, and I have to admit: I don’t really know her from her acting, but more from her songs. This is one of her more “Alternative” songs… still, I could listen to this on a loop for days…
